Maldives calls on UN member states to strengthen multilateral cooperation

The Maldives has called on member states of the United Nations (UN) to strengthen cooperation to address global problems and challenges.

The statement was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid in a video message sent on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter. In his statement, Minister Shahid highlighted the principles and ideals of the Charter that give voice and purpose to all nations on the basis of equality, despite the size of nations. The minister called on all member states of the UN to strengthen multilateral cooperation to address global problems and challenges, such as climate change, sustainable development and natural disasters. He further reaffirmed the Maldives’ readiness to work with all nations to promote the shared ideals for peace, economic progress and social justice.

The UN Charter was signed in San Francisco, US on June 26, 1945, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on October 24, 1945. The Charter calls for the UN to maintain international peace and security, promote social progress and better standards of life, strengthen international law and promote human rights.
