Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has stated Velana International Airport (VIA) is ready to resume operations under the new normal conditions.
Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), acting Managing Director of MACL Moosa Solih said the preparations to resume services have been ongoing since borders were closed, noting plans had already been made on how to handle aircraft during a service suspension. Moosa Solih revealed an isolation centre has also been established at VIA, and guaranteed 100% compliance to safety standards. He added the airport is now fully prepared to resume services to customers.
Meanwhile, General Manager of Terminal Services at MACL Ibrahim Hussain said over 7,000 passengers had departed from the airport across May and June, while over 1,000 arrivals were recorded during the period. He noted all departures and arrivals were carried out within the guidelines of the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Speaking at the committee, Deputy Chief Officer of Airport Emergency Service Mohamed Fayaz said additional emergencies are anticipated during the new normal phase, adding the airport is being prepared for such emergencies. He added thermal screening has been installed in 8 locations of the airport, while physical distancing markings have been drawn in the international terminal. He also noted only the passengers are allowed inside the domestic terminal, unless assistance is required.
MACL has predicted flight movements will decrease to 10 international flight and 15-20 domestic flights per day during the new normal phase.
