Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has denied issuing orders to withhold any charges related to the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
The prosecutor general made the remarks in a statement issued to falsify claims on an online newspaper that an order had been given him to withhold investigations on certain members of the ruling party and the current government involved in the MMPRC corruption scandal.
In the statement, PG Shameem said investigative authorities in the Maldives operate with the freedom ensured by law, adding the prosecutor general does not make any decisions on conducting criminal investigations. He refuted claims of issuing any orders to withhold or abort an investigation or to forgo any charges related to the MMPRC corruption scandal.
The prosecutor general further stated publishing a blatant lie which could affect public confidence in the PG Office, without even attempting to clarify the matter through the institution, goes against the regulations of journalism. The statement further read the PG Office has decided to submit the matter to Maldives Media Council (MMC).
