Charges to be pressed against 312 individuals for breaching lockdown orders

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has forwarded 312 cases to the Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) to raise charges for breaching the lockdown orders imposed in the Greater Male' Region amid the COVID-19 situation.

Speaking to PSM News, Chief Superintendent of Police Yoonus Sabah revealed MPS received 80 cases related to breaching lockdown orders. Revealing further details, he said 582 individuals were taken in to custody upon breaches of the lockdown orders, of which 312 cases have been forwarded to the PG Office to raise charges for breaching the lockdown orders on multiple occasions. He added only 37 people are in the custody of MPS for breaching the lockdown orders.

As per the latest statistics publicised by MPS, over 9,000 individuals were fined for breaching the lockdown orders imposed on April 15. The individuals who were fined include 8,095 people from Male' City, 833 from Hulhumale' and 140 from Villimale'.
