Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has decided to take action against Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) for breaching the Political Parties Act.
ECM decided to take action against MDA for not holding its congress in accordance to the party’s basic regulations. The party has been USD 3,247 as per the Political Parties Act, which must be paid within 1 month after the government lifts the State of Public Health Emergency. The party has also been asked to hold its congress as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, ECM has taken action against DRP for multiple breaches of the Political Party Act and failure to pay up the fines imposed on the party in 2016 and 2019. The commission said DRP has failed to submit its annual reports of the last two years, and has also not held its congress in accordance to the basic regulations of the party. The commission has decided to conduct a meeting with DRP to discuss the latest course of action regarding the violations.
Furthermore, ECM has decided to take action against MTD for not holding its congress as per the basic regulations of the party and the Political Parties Act. The party has been fined USD 1,948, which is to be paid within 1 month after the State of Public Health Emergency is lifted. The party has also been instructed to hold its congress as soon as possible.
