Gender Minister calls for nation-wide efforts to build a safer society for the elderly

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi calls for nation-wide efforts to build a safer society for elderly citizens in the Maldives.

Tweeting on the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the gender minister said each individual carries a responsibility to build a safer environment for vulnerable people in the society. She called for nation-wide efforts to build a caring and inclusive society for elderly citizens, where they are safe from abuse.

Statistics of the gender ministry revealed 39 cases of elder abuse was reported to the ministry between January and April this year, with 59% of the cases involving abuse of elderly men. The ministry revealed 83 elder abuse cases were reported in 2019.
