Over 9,000 people fined for breaching lockdown orders

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed over 9,000 people have been fined for breaching lockdown orders in the Greater Male’ Region.

MPS has been handing out fines to individuals found on the streets of Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villimale’ without a valid permit, as part of efforts to reduce the transmission of COVID-19. MPS has also been arresting individuals who breach lockdown orders on multiple occasions.

As per the latest statistics of MPS, 9,068 people have been fined for breaching lockdown orders since April 15. This includes 8,095 people from Male’, 833 from Hulhumale’ and 140 from Villimale’.

Meanwhile, 597 arrests have been made in the Greater Male’ Region upon multiple breaches of lockdown orders. This includes 548 arrests in Male’, 46 in Hulhumale’ and 3 in Villimale’.

Individuals going out on essential purposes are required to seek the relevant permit from MPS. However, elderly citizens are currently allowed to go out for exercise without a permit between 0500hrs and 0800 hrs every day.

The lockdown imposed in the Greater Male’ Region is set to expire on June 14.
