The Parliament of the Maldives has opened the proposed education bill and higher education bill for public comments.
The education bill was submitted to the parliament on behalf of the government by Parliamentarian Mohamed Mumthaz, while the higher education bill was submitted on behalf of the government by Parliamentarian Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq. Both bills are currently under committee review.
The parliament announced the bills are now open for public comments and requested the public to submit any comments or suggestions regarding the bills before 1400hrs on June 18.
The objective of the education bill is to establish a legislative framework which ensures the Right to Education specified under the Constitution of the Maldives. The bill specifies the fundamental components to be incorporated into the education system of the Maldives, and the responsibilities of the state, teachers and parents in protecting the Right to Education.
Meanwhile, the higher education bill aims to establish a legislative framework to promote and develop the higher education sector of the Maldives. The bill includes the process of registering and operating higher educational institutions in the Maldives as well as ways of ensuring a certain standard of quality is maintained in these institutions.
