Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has presented a detailed report prepared by parliamentary committees on the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 on the Maldives to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The report was presented to the president during a meeting held at the President’s Office. The speaker noted the report details the economic impacts and obstructions to daily lives and businesses caused by COVID-19, and recommendations for mitigation measures. He expressed hope the government would find the contents of the report useful, as it prepares guidelines relevant to easing restrictive measures proportionate to the success of the country in containing the virus.
President Solih thanked the speaker for the hard work of the different committees involved in drafting the report. The president further extended his gratitude to the speaker and the members of the parliament, for their assistance during this difficult time, noting their ongoing work is crucial to helping the country recover and revive its economy. He emphasised that all state and government institutions should work collaboratively in the fight against COVID-19, and noted the support of the legislature and judiciary in particular, is critical.
During the meeting, the speaker also updated the president on the activities being carried out at the parliament to assist the government during this time of crisis.
