Most electricity bills lowered following subsidies: STELCO

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has stated most electricity bills in households lowered significantly this month after applying the government subsidies.

Speaking at a press conference, Managing Director of STELCO Hassan Mughnee noted 40% of the electricity bill for households were subsidised by the government, which has lowered most of the electricity bills significantly this month. In response to some complaints from the public that the bill has not lowered, Mughnee noted electricity usage usually goes up during the month of Ramadan every year. He added the increase in usage would be indicated in all the bills.

In order to help the public with the financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the government announced all electricity and water bills for April and May would be subsidised by 40% and 30% respectively. The government revealed USD 19.5 million was allocated for the subsidies.
