Signs of recovery from COVID-19 are promising: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated there are promising signs that the Maldives can recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the press, President Solih noted the high level of public compliance to the precautionary measures set by health authorities in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives. The president said the country can already see promising signs of overcoming the pandemic, as a result of public cooperation to control measures. However, he said the public must continue following the instructions given by health authorities in order to ensure the Maldives can fully overcome the situation.

President Solih acknowledged the difficulties faced by the public due to the lockdown, adding the government is formulating plans to gradually ease the restrictions and return to a normal life, albeit with some restrictions still in place. He expressed confidence the country can return to a normal situation in the near future, with the support and assistance of the public.

Noting the celebrations of Eid-al-Fitr have been restricted this year due to the COVID-19 situation, the president highlighted the remarkable efforts to maintain and enhance the close bonds of family and friendship through social media despite the situation. He also noted most of the island communities were able to take part in the congregational Eid prayers and exchange Eid greetings.

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has permitted prayer congregations in islands which have no COVID-19 cases and are not under monitoring. However, the public has been advised to maintain personal hygiene and take the necessary safety precautions when attending prayer congregations.
