Schools will not be opened before first term holidays: NEOC

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has revealed schools in the Maldives will not be opened before the first term holidays allocated in the academic calendar.

Speaking at the daily press briefing, Spokesperson of NEOC Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said schools will only be opened after assessing the situation of COVID-19 in the country. Noting Ministry of Education has prepared plans for three possible scenarios, Mabrook stated a decision would be made after extensive discussions with the Technical Advisory Group (TAG). He said the schools will be opened on June 14 by the earliest, as per the current situation.

Meanwhile, the education ministry is working to commence televised classes next week. The education ministry has decided to adopt a revised national syllabus when learning resumes after the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic is lifted. The ministry stated the syllabus will be revised to cover only the essential contents as schools have been closed for a long duration following the community spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives, adding syllabuses are available after revisions on the website of the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The ministry is currently making arrangements for teachers to video record lessons which will then be televised on channels of Public Service Media (PSM).
