Education Ministry to adopt a revised syllabus

Ministry of Education has decided to adopt a revised national syllabus when learning resumes after the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic is lifted.

Speaking to PSM News, State Minister of Education Dr. Abdulla Rasheed said efforts are underway to make arrangements to resume its televised classes. He said the syllabus will be revised to cover only the essential contents as schools have been closed for a long duration following community spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives. He said the syllabuses are available after revisions on the website of the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The state minister further said the televised classes will cover all subjects offered in schools although the contents have been revised. Noting the media has relayed false information to the public, the state minister said all subjects including Quran will be covered via its televised classes.

The ministry is currently making arrangements for teachers to video record lessons which will then be televised on channels of Public Service Media (PSM). Rasheed said over 350 teachers and 50 schools contribute to offering televised lessons to students, adding the education ministry is also negotiating with local internet service providers to offer 10GB of internet data for the teachers.

Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has previously stated the schools will operate four sessions once classes resume during the new normal phase. She said work is underway to formulate policies and measures on teaching and learning activities. The ministry expects students to minimise time spent in schools and engage in distance mode learning.
