Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has stated the government plans to ease some of the movement restrictions imposed in some islands due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking with PSM News, Health Minister Ameen said there are some islands where restrictions need to be eased, as these islands have had no entry or exit in the last 15-30 days. The minister said the government plans to ease the restrictions on such islands, although the plan is on hold as the COVID-19 outbreak is expected to hit its peak in the Maldives in the last two weeks of May. However, he said restrictions will be lifted in certain islands very soon.
The health minister said the public must still take precautions in travelling between islands, even after the restrictions are lifted. He said certain rules must still be followed when travelling in order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
The minister also indicated the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' Region could be eased in the coming weeks. He said lockdown orders will be eased after making sure COVID-19 cases and individuals needing treatment from hospitals would not get out of control.
The lockdown in Greater Male' Region is currently in effect until May 28.
