Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) has revealed the Migrant Relief Fund has received over USD 50,000 in donations.

MRC stated the total donations collected to the fund currently amounts to USD 56,904. The organisation added the fund is still open for donations, noting donations will be accepted until the end of this month.

MRC stated the fund will be used to provide basic necessities for migrant workers in need of assistance amid the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' Region due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organisation acknowledged the support received from several businesses and the general public in the efforts to assist expatriates during the lockdown.

MRC has been working with National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) and Maldives Police Service (MPS) in assisting migrant workers during the lockdown. As such, several workers who had been living in congested spaces have been relocated to temporary shelters, while food, clothes and other essential items are being provided for migrant workers in need.

MRC is the biggest non-profit, volunteer organisation in the Maldives. Over 500 MRC volunteers have been active in providing relief and assistance amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
