Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has formulated a guideline for investigation of serious offenses and instructs Maldives Police Service (MPS) to follow it in their investigations.
The guideline formulated pursuant to the constitution was a measure to oversee the legality of criminal investigations as part of steps to strengthen the criminal justice system in the Maldives. As per the guideline, MPS is now required to provide a weekly update to the PG Office on the investigation of terrorism and serious offences. Additionally, MPS must also communicate every 15 days with the PG Office any arrests made in such cases.
Moreover, once the investigations are over, MPS must send a report to the PG Office including details of the investigation including a summary of the investigation, evidence and information collected in addition to further clarifications and information required regarding the cases being investigated. The report must also include factors that may affect the investigation and other possible influences.
The guideline is now in effect as part of the efforts of the PG Office to better the criminal justice system in the country.
