12 individuals evicted from rented apartments amid COVID-19 crisis

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has revealed 12 individuals have been evicted from their apartments after being unable to pay rent due to the financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A survey conducted by HRCM shows 25 individuals have received eviction warnings in Male' City for failing to pay rent during the COVID-19 crisis, while 12 individuals have been evicted from their apartments. HRCM noted 8 of them are currently living in temporary shelters arranged by the government. The commission also noted 5 of them are facing difficulties in buying food due to effects on their wages.

Furthermore, HRCM stated 44% of the individuals who took part in the survey are living in rented apartments, while the income of 30% participants have been affected by the pandemic. The commission noted 17% of the participants have no means of paying rent due to severe effects on employment or income. 74% participants reported they had received their salary on time during the crisis while 26% reported they had not, according to HRCM.

The survey conducted by HRCM is part of the efforts of the commission to identify the effects of the pandemic on the basic rights and necessities of people. The commission revealed 1,091 people and 33 local councils took part in the survey.
