Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has expressed confidence in a common regional strategy in the fight against COVID-19 that can successfully overcome the situation.
In an interview with an Indian newspaper, The Hindu, Minister Shahid shared the latest developments and efforts of the Maldives to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The foreign minister noted with regret the Maldives is facing one of the hardest situations due to the pandemic.
The foreign minister acknowledged the fight cannot be easy for a small country like the Maldives when the world's wealthiest and most powerful countries are struggling desperately in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the minister assured the government is prepared to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on the citizens. In this regard, he mentioned the efforts launched to maintain the cash flow and the economic stimulus packages introduced for businesses.
Moreover, Minister Shahid shared the initial measures imposed in the Maldives once the detection of the imported cases and how the measures were strengthened during the situation of a community spread. The foreign minister reiterated the commitment of the Maldives to treat all patients without discrimination despite their nationalities.
When asked about how the external aid and debt will impact the country, the minister answered the administration is committed to ensuring the rights of the citizens, adding sustainable payment strategies will be established.
