Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed it has fined 819 people and arrested another 61 for violating the lockdown imposed in the Greater Male' Region until May 1.
Speaking at a press conference held at the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC), Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen announced the fines and arrests on April 26 represented the highest figures since the lockdown was declared. He noted 122 individuals have been fined and another 9 individuals were arrested for violating lockdown orders on April 26.
MPS has been stricter in enforcing fines and arrests against those who violate the orders since April 19 after a community spread was reported in Male' City. However, individuals are allowed to go out for essential needs after obtaining a special permit from MPS. The penalty for violating the lockdown orders by going out without a permit results in a fine of not less than USD 65.
The assistant commissioner noted MPS has issued 4,480 delivery permits in the Greater Male’ Region. He further stated the permits are now issued after clarifying whether the applicants for permits have come into contact with an individual who had tested positive for COVID-19.
