Government to pay USD 324 as unemployment allowance

Minister of Economic Affairs Fayyaz Ismail has said the government has decided to pay USD 324 per month for a period of three months to those who lose their jobs due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations, Minister Fayyaz stated the ministry is currently verifying the individuals registered at the Job Centre set up by the ministry. He noted the government has decided to provide an unemployment allowance of USD 324 for individuals dismissed from their jobs following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Maldivian economy has been hit hard along with the global economic regression caused by COVID-19. Amid the economic crisis, private employers and companies are dismissing employees from their jobs and forcing unpaid leaves citing the lack of income and inability to manage expenses.

The government has called individuals with cases of redundancies, wage cuts, and no-pay leaves to register at the Job Centre set up at the Ministry of Economic Development.
