Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has conveyed profound sympathies to families of those affected by the mass shooting in Nova Scotia, Canada.
The Canadian police said the death toll from the worst mass shooting in Canadian history rose to 19, including a police officer and the gunman, adding fatalities from the weekend killings are expected to rise further. Canadian authorities said the gunman, who at one point impersonated as a policeman and also meticulously disguised his car to look like a police cruiser, shattered the peace of a rural community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia during a 12-hour rampage that started late on April 18.
Following the attack, Foreign Minister Shahid sent a message of condolence to Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada François-Philippe Champagne. In the message, the foreign minister expressed the devastating news was received with shock.
The minister further extended profound sympathies, on behalf of the people and the government of the Maldives, to the families of those affected and wish the wounded a speedy recovery. He said thoughts and prayers are with the people and the government of Canada during the time of distress.
The Canadian police said the suspect shot people at different locations in Nova Scotia, many of them randomly. He was killed in a confrontation with police officers. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the attack as a tragedy.
