Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated the efforts of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) during the COVID-19 pandemic will be etched in golden letters in national history.
In her address on the occasion of the 128th anniversary of MNDF, Minister Mariya highlighted the tireless efforts of MNDF personnel in safeguarding the nation against COVID-19. The minister said the efforts of MNDF during these tough times will be fondly remembered by the people of Maldives. She added the national services undertaken by the military are recognised and appreciated across the nation.
In a special message given on the occasion of the 128th anniversary of MNDF, Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal assured the public the military remains committed to undertake any sacrifices required to safeguard the nation from the COVID-19 pandemic. Noting the anniversary has come during a grim period of time for the nation, Shamaal noted MNDF personnel are active in the frontlines of the pandemic, away from their loved ones, and facing high risks to ensure the safety of the public. He added MNDF will not hesitate to take on any challenges to ensure the safety of the people of the Maldives.
Military service was established in the Maldives on April 21, 1892. Across its 128 years of service, the military has served to protect national security and harmony amid various dangers and threats to the nation including the terrorist attack of November 3, 1988.
