President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is the protective shield of the people of the Maldives in all matters which involve national interest. The president made the remarks while delivering his address on the occasion of the 128th anniversary of MNDF.
President Solih stated the military is the protective shield of the nation and its citizens, which serves to defend national security and harmony ahead of everything else. The president noted the 128th anniversary of MNDF has come at a time when the military is undertaking another important national service in the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the determination and commitment shown by MNDF during these testing times proves the military will sacrifice everything for the safety and well-being of Maldivian citizens.
The president further noted MNDF undertook very important national services during 2019 to save lives and property of Maldivian citizens. In this regard, the president acknowledged and appreciated the contribution of MNDF in the rescue and relief efforts during the tragic fire incident which burned several buildings and warehouses in Male' City, the fire incident at Male' Southwest Harbour and the speedboat accident in Nolhivaramfaru, Haa Dhaalu Atoll. He added the efforts of the military during 2019 strengthened public confidence in the institution and helped to further develop the services of MNDF.
In his address, the president also acknowledged the contribution of Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi and Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal in enhancing the capacity of the military and establishing a system which enables the military to work closely with the public.
