President pardons over 100 prisoners

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pardoned over 100 prisoners serving their sentences.

A statement released by the Ministry of Home Affairs said the decision to pardon 105 inmates was made by the powers granted to the president under the Clemency Act as a precautionary measure to protect the prisoners and staff of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS). The statement further stated the measure was taken after considering the results of the people after they completed the rehabilitation programmes. Additionally, the situation of their accommodation and likely threats they pose to the society, the nature of their crimes were also evaluated before the decision was made.

The statement highlighted the counsel from experts on reducing the inmate population in order to ensure the health safety and protection of inmates and staff of MCS.
