Efforts underway to resume regular parliament sittings next week

The Parliament of Maldives has stated efforts are underway to resume regular sittings next week, upon the advice of Health Protection Agency (HPA).]

Secretary General Fathimath Niusha said efforts are underway to resume regular sittings next week, upon instruction from Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. However, she stated the parliament sittings will be resumed based on the advice of HPA, taking into consideration the State of Public Health Emergency which has been declared in the country.

The parliament has been conducting its sittings online following the declaration of the State of Public Health Emergency. However, the speaker has cancelled the online sittings scheduled for this week to allow parliamentary committees to complete pending work this week.

A number of bills have been submitted to the parliament, regarding the constitutional amendments required to be brought in order to postpone the local council elections and extend the terms of incumbent councillors until elections can be held. However, opinions have been divided on the matter and no decision has been made yet.
