Developing agriculture crucial for food security of the nation

Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Zaha Waheed has highlighted the importance of developing the agricultural sector to ensure food security in Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference held to provide information on the efforts of the government to buy agricultural produce from local farmers, Minister Zaha said agricultural production is crucial to ensure the food security of the nation, especially during a global crisis such as COVID-19. The minister assured the government will provide full support and assistance to develop the agricultural sector and increase production. In this regard, she said plans are being formulated with the Ministry of Economic Development to assist local farmers, while the State Trading Organisation (STO) will assist in storing and marketing the produce.

Furthermore, Minister Zaha stated discussions are ongoing with companies that have been awarded islands for agricultural purposes on increasing production. She noted various items are being brought to overcome the difficulties in cultivating certain food items in Maldives, adding the aim is to reduce the dependency on imports.

The minister also highlighted the importance of ensuring the local produce is safe for consumption. In this regard, she noted special care must be taken in applying pesticides to farms as it could harm the produce.
