State will not have to pay compensation to TMA: Economic Minister

Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has affirmed there is no situation where the government will have to pay compensation to Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) over the new seaplane terminal. The economic minister made the remarks at a press conference held at President's Office to disseminate information about the new seaplane terminal.

Speaking to the press, Economic MInister Fayyaz dismissed comments made by Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed that a situation may rise where the government will have to pay compensation to TMA. In response, the minister affirmed a situation would not come where the government will have to compensate TMA. Commenting on the report published by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), he claimed the standards followed in compiling the report are unclear.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer said when allocating space from new seaplane terminal for airlines, the government considered a way which does not cause a significant loss to the state, in addition to ensuring a way which does not affect the trust of foreign investors.

According to the new policy set by the government on the seaplane terminal, TMA will now get 6,300 square metres from the terminal at a rate of USD 10.35 per square metre. The government decided to lease the remaining 21,000 square metres for other parties.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will take over operations of the seaplane terminal after two years.
