Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated increasing awareness is paramount to promoting and protecting the rights and freedoms guaranteed to every citizen by the Constitution of Maldives. The vice president made the remarks while addressing the function held this morning to officially inaugurate the ‘Masalas Raajje’ awareness campaign.
Commending the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) for initiating the nation-wide ‘Masalas Raajje’ awareness campaign, and the 15 other partners including independent institutions and civic organisations, Vice President Naseem highlighted on the importance of increasing public awareness about the rights and freedoms of every citizen enshrined in the Constitution.
Noting the new constitution which was ratified in 2008 ensured the separation of powers and granted numerous rights and freedoms to the people, Vice President Naseem stated the responsibility today is promoting and protecting those rights. He further stressed that, while upholding the rights of every individual, all government and independent institutions, in addition to the civil society, should exercise transparency and accountability.
Emphasising that the campaign’s launching coincides with the coming into force of the new Child Rights Protection Act (No.: 21/2019), the vice president urged all relevant institutions and civil society to intensify efforts to increase public awareness on child rights. He also spoke about women empowerment, expressing hope over the administration’s efforts on promoting gender equality and eliminating gender barriers which prevent the participation of women in social and economic spheres.
Speaking at the function, President of ECM Ahmed Shareef expressed hope the campaign, which is jointly conducted by several state institutions and Non-Government Organisations (NGO)s, would be effective in spreading public awareness on various issues, including social and legal issues.
The campaign led by ECM was launched with the participation of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Attorney General’s Office, Civil Service Commission (CSC), Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Local Government Authority (LGA), Maldives Broadcasting Commission, Maldives Islamic University (IUM), Maldives National University (MNU), Maldives Police Service, Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Parliament of Maldives, Prosecutor General’s Office; and civil society organisations Transparency Maldives and Hope for Women.
