NDMA still assisting families displaced in September 20 fire

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed the authority is still providing financial aid to the families who were displaced at the tragic fire incident in Male’ City on September 20, 2019.

In response to claims the administration is no longer assisting the seven families who have been moved to Gaakoshi flats, NDMA stated the authority is still providing financial aid to the families living in temporary homes. The authority added the families who were given a timeframe to move back to permanent homes upon advice from the Ministry of Planning and National Infrastructure have not been asked to move out of their temporary homes, noting the families will be assisted until they are able to move back to permanent homes. The authority also stated some of the families have begun reconstructing their permanent homes using the aid provided to them by the administration.

The fire on September 20, 2019 saw 7 residential buildings and 4 warehouses burnt down, with over 800 people seeking assistance following the incident. 38 families were moved to temporary homes, of which 24 families were renting apartments in the fire-affected buildings.

The administration provided aid to 115 families who were affected by fire, covering 20% of the damages incurred on household items. The aid collected to the fire relief fund was also distributed among affected families in accordance to the level of damage incurred.
