Commonwealth scholarships now open for Maldivians

The Commonwealth has extended Maldivians the opportunity to apply for its scholarship programmes after Maldives rejoined the global organisation.

The decision was made at a meeting held between Secretary General of the Commonwealth Patricia Scotland and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Abdulla Shahid. All the available scholarships and applications will be shared by the Commonwealth soon.

Before Maldives quit the Commonwealth in 2016, many Maldivians pursued higher education in Commonwealth countries under various scholarship schemes.

The Maldivian flag was hoisted at the Commonwealth Secretariat following the decision to allow Maldives to rejoin the 54 member organisation. Furthermore, Minister Shahid also attended a meeting held in London with Secretary General Patricia Scotland to discuss ways to collaborate in the efforts of the organisation in addition to Commonwealth scholarships offered to Maldivians.

The meeting was also attended by High Commissioner from Maldives to the UK Dr. Farahanaz Faisal, Secretary of Foreign Relations at the President's Office Sabra Ibrahim Noordeen, senior officials from the High Commission and Majority Leader of the Parliament Ali Azim.
