Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has opened the opportunity to submit candidacies to compete in the primary for the constituencies of Kulhudhuffushi City. In an announcement, MDP asked its members to submit candidacies by January 16.
The main ruling party opened to submit candidacies for Kulhudhuffushi seperately. It closed the opportunity to submit candidacies for other constituencies on January 10.
The party said it received over 1,400 submissions to compete in the party primaries. MDP will hold its primaries on January 31 and has declared it will compete for all the seats in the local council elections.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih designated Kulhudhuffushi as a city from January 1, 2020 onwards. Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has set the electoral constituencies of Kulhudhuffushi City for the upcoming local council elections. Kulhudhuffushi has been divided into six main electoral constituencies, which are the north, west, north-central, south-central, south-west and south-east.
ECM has scheduled to hold the local council elections on April 4.
