Statistics publicised by Ministry of Finance has showed the state spent most on the education sector in 2019.
The statistics showed Ministry of Education spent the whole of its USD 181 million budget. The second highest spender was Ministry of Health with an expenditure of USD 123 million. The health ministry was also allocated a further USD 123 million from the finance ministry in 2019.
Moreover, Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure spent USD 97 million last year. National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) also spent USD 97 million in 2019.
Other big spenders include Maldives Police Service (MPS) which spent USD 90 million and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) which spent USD 71 million. The expenditure of Dharumavantha Hospital also stood at USD 71 million.
Other notable expenditures include USD 472 million spent by finance ministry from its special budget and USD 84 million spent from the Pension Fund.
The expenditures of most state institutions stood below the USD 30 million mark. In this regard, Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) spent USD 29 million, Parliament of Maldives spent USD 12 million and President's Office spent USD 11.8 million. Other institutions such as Maldives Media Council (MMC), Tax Appeal Tribunal, Information Commissioner's Office and Family Protection Authority spent less than USD 323,000.
