National Integrity Commission (NIC) has visited Maafushi Prison to investigate the causes of discord and disobedience in the facility.
President of NIC Ahmed Sulaiman said the commission intends to listen to all parties involved and observe the environment before a decision is made. He said commission members visited the prison as part of the investigation and gathered relevant information.
NIC President Sulaiman also remarked the support of Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) during the visit, noting prison officers allowed them to question inmates privately and allowed members to visit the places members wanted to inspect.
Following discord in Maafushi Prison, Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz attributed the discord to attempts to stop smuggling items in to the facility. Munaz said although the metal detectors are at work as people walk in and out, MCS is currently unable to scan for drugs. He said MCS has plans to install body scanners to improve safety standards in the prison.
Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has also visited Maafushi Prison for an assessment following the discord.
