Elections Commission has decided the seats allocated for women councillors in the upcoming local council election.
In a function held at the Election Commission, the draw for the seats were taken in the presence of officials from political parties.
While councilors are to be elected for 18 seats in Male’ City, 6 seats can only be contested by women councillors. They are:
1. Male City Constituency 2
2. Male City Constituency 4
3. Male City Constituency 9
4. Male City Constituency12
5. Male City Constituency14
6. Male City Constituency18
Addu City council now needs 12 councillors to be elected and 6 seats can only be contested by women councillors. They are:
1. Addu City Constituency 3
2. Addu City Constituency 6
3. Addu City Constituency 8
4. Addu City Constituency 12
Of the 18 councillors to be elected for Fuvahmulaku City, 2 seats can only be contested by women
They are:
1. Fuvahmulaku City Constituency 1
2. Fuvahmulaku City Constituency 4
The amendments to the Decentralisation Act require all councils to allocate 33 percent of the councillors to be women. The local council election has been scheduled for April 4, 2020.
