Parliament approves Shameem as PG

Parliament of Maldives has approved the appointment of Hussain Shameem as the Prosecutor General (PG). The parliament approved the appointment of Shameem as PG with votes from all 74 parliamentarians present during the vote.

Shameem, who has previously served as the Deputy PG, is one of the most renowned lawyers in the country. He has advocated for the rights of many individuals who were detained indefinitely without a sentence. During the interview by the Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary, Shameem said he applied for the position of PG to promote an independent and unbiased judiciary.

The position of PG became vacant after Aishath Bisham resigned from the position on November 28. Bisham resigned as PG at a time the judiciary committee was seeking to dismiss her on allegations of negligence in taking responsibility and providing false information. She denied all accusations against her and claimed the acts of her dismissal motion was being pursued against the objectives of the constitution.
