Funds approved for the second phase of Maafaru Airport development: Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has said the recent visit by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to United Arab Emirates (UAE) resulted in the approval of funds for the second phase of Maafaru International Airport development. Foreign Minister Shahid made the statement while addressing the function held to mark the 48th National Day of UAE.

During the function, Minister Shahid expressed sincere appreciation and gratitude for UAE’s continuing assistance and goodwill towards Maldives. In this regard, the minister shared that the discussions with the leadership of UAE during the recent visit by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih resulted in the approval of the second phase of Maafaru International Airport development, which includes land reclamation and extension of the runway to accommodate wide bodied aircraft.

Minister Shahid noted the close ties of friendship between the two countries have strengthened and taken unprecedented strides, ensuring a much stronger development partnership. The minister highlighted the role of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development in key developmental initiatives which has greatly benefited Maldives.

Minister Shahid congratulated the leadership of UAE for the continuing progress the country has achieved both regionally and internationally. The minister further noted the participation of Maldives in the EXPO 2020 to be held next year and reiterated the commitment of the Government of Maldives to further consolidate the close friendship between the two countries.

The reception, which was organized by Embassy of UAE in Maldives, was held last night at Dharubaaruge.
