Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed his prison sentence and the fine issued by the Criminal Court.
On November 28, Criminal Court of Maldives sentenced him to 5 years in prison with a fine of USD 5 million, after he was found guilty of the money laundering charges the state had pressed against him.
Speaking at a press conference organised by opposition, Leader of People's National Congress (PNC) Abdul Raheem Abdulla said lawyers have appealed the case at High Court. He said the lawyers additionally requested to delay serving his sentence in prison, and to release him under bail.
While the case has been submitted for appeal, former President Yameen has been transferred to Maafushi Prison after carrying out relevant medical examinations before the transfer.
