Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has transferred convicted former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to Maafushi Prison.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) confirmed the transfer highlighting he was transferred to the Special Protection Unit (SPU). SPU houses high profile inmates and those who require additional security. MCS assured Yameen will receive required security and services all times.
Former President Yameen was first detained at Male' Prison after he was found guilty of the money laundering charges pressed against him. MCS said he was kept at Male' prison to carry due medical examination in accordance with the policies. The transfer was done after all medical assessments were completed.
Lawyers of the former President Yameen have criticised the condition of the prison where he has been kept. Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz said the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has requested to visit Yameen at the prison following complaints it had received. He further said 3 officials from HRCM were granted the permission to visit him at Male' Prison.
Regarding the visit, HRCM said it has observed the condition of the prison cell where former president has been kept and denied further comments on the observations.
Criminal court sentenced former President Yameen to 5 years in prison along with a fine of USD 5 million, after he was found guilty of the money laundering charges pressed by the state against him.
