Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary is seeking to dismiss Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisham on allegations of negligence in taking responsibility and providing false information.
Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Chair of the committee Moosa Siraj said PG Bisham has been requested to present herself in front the committee on November 28, to respond to questions from the committee. Siraj further said there are various allegations against her. He said while she had said PG appealed murdered journalist Rilwan's case at the court, documents from Criminal Court revealed otherwise.
Additionally, PG gave false information regarding her urgent visit to President's Office following Supreme Court ruling on February 1, 2018. Siraj said no meeting of the Drug Council was held during the period, although she claimed she had attended President's Office to partake in the meeting. He further said the committee also found she was negligent in fulfilling her duties as PG. She was also found to have issued different opinions on one case at different occasions. Siraj said there are various other observations of the committee. He said the committee will make a decision after Bisham responds to questions from the committee.
PG Bisham has faced harsh criticisms from various parliamentarians of the current sitting. Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed forwarded her case to the committee on November 20. The judiciary committee also tried to take a no confidence motion previously as well.
While her no confidence motion was also submitted to the parliament twice in the previous sitting, and once before in the current sitting, a motion had not been forwarded to the floor. She was also accused of neglecting her duties when 12 parliamentarians were arrested by the previous administration.
Bisham was appointed as the PG during the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on November 24, 2015.
