Several incumbents implicated in MMPRC embezzlement scandal

Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisham has said the findings of the probe into the embezzlement scandal and money laundering scam of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) implicate several of the current parliament members, ministers and judges.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts, Bisham said she is unable to share the details of the investigation, as some parliamentarians at the committee have also been implicated. She declined to disclose any information to the committee before they were excused from the session.

Although Parliamentarian Yaugoob Abdulla initially requested to reveal the names of the persons implicated, he seconded the proposal of Parliamentarian Abdulla Riyaz to carry a closed session after removing the parliamentarians implicated and the media.

The committee includes Parliamentarian Mohamed Nashiz as the chair, Parliamentarian Abdulla Riyaz, Parliamentarian Yaugoob Abdulla, Parliamentarian Ilyas Labeeb, Parliamentarian Hassan Afeef, Parliamentarian Hassan Afeef and Parliamentarian Ahmed Amir.

The administration states the MMPRC corruption scandal involves embezzlement and laundering of over nearly USD 200 million in state funds.
