Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been sentenced for 3 months and 18 days of imprisonment over his attempt to flee Maldives.
The Supreme Court issued an order putting travel restrictions on Adeeb who then remained under house arrest before he tried to escape to India on a tugboat.
The Criminal Court sentenced Adeeb after he confessed that he attempted to escape after the Supreme Court issued a verdict putting travel restrictions on him. After the judge found Adeeb guilty of the criminal offence, he and the state prosecutors were given the opportunity to express their opinions about the type of a verdict to be given for his breach of the law as stated by the constitution. In the first day of the court hearing, Adeeb had presented his medical files to the court.
Adeeb has appealed the Supreme Court’s verdict to annul a jail sentence by a lower court on corruption and embezzlement of state funds.
