Adeeb placed under house arrest

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has placed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb under house arrest.

The former vice president was placed under house arrest at a time Supreme Court had ordered to detain him until the end of the trial on Maabinhura embezzlement case after also holding his passport. An electronic tag was put on him before he was placed under house arrest in accordance with the direction from his doctors, according to MCS. Adeeb was treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after he fainted and collapsed in the cell he was kept in Dhoonidhoo detention facility.

Furthermore, on August 27, Prosecutor General's Office submitted documents to Criminal Court to raise charges against Adeeb for illegally leaving Maldives without proper travel documents. Adeeb was to be summoned by Maldives police on July 31. However, the police said he fled instead of providing a statement regarding the MMPRC corruption scandal. He was also registered as a key witness against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's ongoing money laundering case proceeding at Criminal Court.

The former vice president was apprehended when he arrived in Thoothukudi, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on August 1. He left Maldives on a tugboat named Virgo 9 on July 27.
