Sri Lankan Prime Minister to address Maldivian Parliament

The political parties represented in the Parliament of Maldives has approved to invite Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe to address a special sitting as part of his official visit to Maldives on September 2.

A total of 70 parliamentarians voted to invite Prime Minister Wickremesinghe to address a special sitting during his visit to Maldives. Suring the debate, parliamentarians from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), People's National Congress (PNC), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA) supported to invite the Sri Lankan prime minister to address a sitting as it would be an honour to the parliament.

Recently, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini have also addressed special parliament sittings.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe will be making an official visit to Maldives on September 2, on an invitation from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He will be accompanied by his spouse Professor Maithree Wickremasinghe and a delegation of high level officials including cabinet ministers.

During his visit to Maldives, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe will also be chairing the Indian Ocean Conference 2019, scheduled to take place from September 3-4 at Paradise Island Resort.
