Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi has said the amount of cases resolved out of courts have increased. The chief justice made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Workshop on Judicial Exchange on Alternative Dispute Resolutions held by Maldives International Arbitration and Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with assistance from US State Department.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the chief justice said cases resolved out of courts between parties or commonly known as dispute resolution have increased in the past 4 years. He said from 2015 to 2018, 63% of cases from Civil Court were concluded as dispute resolutions, revealing 50% of those cases were successful. Noting the advantages of dispute resolutions, he stated it is usually faster than the court process, less costly and is more flexible and responsive to the individual needs of the people involved.
Furthermore, the chief justice highlighted the amount of investment and business related cases increased since the establishment of International Arbitration Centre in 2013. Reassuring the trust to invest in Maldives, he lauded the efforts of Arbitration Centre in Maldives to solve business related matters.
The workshop is attended by 15 judges from Maldives and 6 judges from Sri Lanka. Judges from US Southern District of New York and judges from Singapore International Commercial Court will present lectures at the three-day workshop.
