Maldives Ambassador to UAE Presents Credentials to IRENA

The Ambassador of Maldives to the UAE Dr. Hussain Niyaaz has presented his credentials to the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera. Ambassador Niyaaz is the first Permanent Representative of the Maldives to be accredited to IRENA, since Maldives became a member state of IRENA in 2009.

During the ceremony held today at the Headquarters of IRENA, Ambassador Niyaaz mentioned Maldives considers its approach towards renewable energy as a cornerstone of the Maldives’ broader environment policy, and committed to work closely with IRENA to achieve the objectives of the organisation and towards achieving the objective of carbon neutrality in the Maldives.

With its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE, the International Renewable Energy Agency is an intergovernmental organisation that was formally established in January 2009 to support countries in their efforts to transit to a more sustainable energy future, and serves as the primary platform for international cooperation on a number of areas that encourages the adoption of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has over 160 member states.

Since becoming a member of IRENA, Maldives have contributed actively to the work of the organisation. In October 2017, the inaugural meeting of the Renewable Island Energy (IRIE) was held in Maldives and the country continues to be represented at the various meetings of IRENA.
