President appoints Mohamed Hameed as Commissioner of Police

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed as the Commissioner of Police.

The appointment was made by the president by the power bestowed upon him under Article 52 of the Police Act. The appointment came shortly after Hameed returned to the Maldives Police Service as Assistant Commissioner.

Former Commissioner of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed, who was appointed by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the wake of his defeat in the presidential election last September, was dismissed after a brief tenure.

Mohamed Hameed served as the former head of the intelligence department and re-joined the police force in December after the Supreme Court ruled his dismissal in August 2012, on suspicion of leaking confidential information, was unfair.
