President assures to retrieve powers seized from Home Minister

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured to retrieve powers seized from the mandate of Minister of Home Affairs by the previous administration. President Solih made the remarks at a campaign gathering held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at Komandoo in Shaviyani Atoll.

Highlighting former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom seized powers from the mandate of home minister, President Solih revealed the former administration's policy was to collect powers and govern centrally.

The minister has the authority to exercise the power and discretion available to any superior police officer at any given time, according to the Maldives Police Act. However, former President Yameen narrowed the powers of the home minister and took the authority directly to the mandate of the president.

The act also states authority can be practiced by minister unless the president determines otherwise.
