Yameen transferred to house arrest

State has transferred former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to house arrest. Criminal Court ordered to place former President Yameen in custody until the end of trial on the money laundering charges raised by the state.

The Criminal Court made the decision following the request by Prosecutor General's Office which cited, the former president may contaminate evidence and obstruct the investigation.

Following the court order, the former president was taken to Maafushi Prison.
In a statement issued by Maldives Correctional Service, the authority confirmed former president was transferred to house arrest in line with conditions upon advisory of doctor.

In an extensive investigation into money laundering accusations leveled against the former president, it was revealed that he received over USD 1.4 million during the presidential campaign alone as funds deposited to his bank account. Yameen is also being charged with providing false information to mislead an investigation.
