Yameen's trial to be opened for public

Prosecutor General’s Office has revealed the hearings on the money laundering case against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will be open for public.

In a tweet, the Prosecutor General’s Office said it did not request for any part of hearings to be held behind closed doors. The first hearing on the money laundering charges against former President Abdulla Yameen was held on Monday, which was also held open for public. During the presidency of Yameen, many high-level hearings were held behind closed doors.

During the hearing, Criminal Court ordered to keep former president in custody until end of investigation and has been transferred to Maafushi prison. The Criminal Court made the decision following the request by Prosecutor General’s Office saying Yameen may influence evidence and obstruct the investigation process.

Meanwhile, Yameen’s legal team has appealed the Criminal Court order for his detention until end of investigation over money laundering trial. Yameen is currently at the Special Protection Unit in Maafushi Prison, where he will remain detained until the courts conclude the investigation.
