PPM-PNC dropped constituencies to obstruct MDP securing a majority

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has revealed the coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples' National Congress (PNC) decided to drop some constituencies to Jumhooree Party (JP) to obstruct Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from securing a parliament majority. He made the comment while speaking to the public of Maavashu via phone during the ceremony held to launch the campaign activities of former Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed.

Former President Yameen said the PPM-PNC dropped some constituencies as the possibility of MDP securing those seats are highly likely, when contestants from PPM, JP and Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) competes. He added PPM-PNC coalition wish to secure parliament majority in the election. Yameen noted he understands taking back party tickets will create chaos among the candidates.

Following the decision of PPM-PNC coalition, some candidates formerly fielded by the opposition coalition have decided to run independently.
